Geographical Indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country). The use of a GI may act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.
GI is a community right. |

| In today’s world GIs have tremendous economic value as consumers do not want to compromise on the quality of the product, and hence they are willing to pay for quality products. |

| GI are protected as per International Treaties and National Laws, including: |
|
- Special laws for the protection of Geographical Indications or appellations of origin
- Trademark laws in the form of collective marks or certification marks
- Laws against unfair competition
- Consumer protection laws, or
- Specific laws or decrees that recognize individual Geographical Indications.

| An application for registration of a Geographical Indication in India requires the following particulars: |

|
- Name, Address & Nationality of the Applicant
- List of association of persons/producers/organization/authority
- Legal status and country of incorporation
|
|
| Specimen of the Geographical Indication |
|
- Six printed specimen of GI, if Black & White;
- Ten printed specimen of GI, if coloured
- In case GI consists of shape of goods or its packaging, the reproduction furnished shall consist of at least three different views of GI and a description by word of GI
|
